There are three characters inside the cartoon. The one who wear the long white coat is the researcher, he is researching whether government policies are destroying the earth or not. The researcher looks experienced and confident. He draw conclusion based on the facts which he is holding in his hand. The conclusion is ‘we are destroying earth’. The ‘we’ in the conclusion basically mean the government and the citizens.
Other than that, the fat guy on the right side wearing grey suit is representing the government. When he see the conclusion, he tries to avoid the responsibility. He says ‘could you kindly rephrase that in equivocal, inaccurate, vague, self-serving and roundabout terms that we can all understand? ’ Obviously, the government do not want the outcome so he tells the researcher rephrase in vague terms. The man uses his finger and points at the researcher, like giving a harsh command and putting pressure on the researcher.
On the bottom right corner of the cartoon, we can see some money are flying out from the briefcase. It shows that although the government has extra money, they still not take responsibility to protect the environment. They even tries to change the fact, pretend nothing happen. The guy in black suit is government people, he supports the government. He has less contribution to the cartoon itself.
As we can see the government wants to stay away from troubles. As a citizen, we need to perform our citizen responsibilities. We can express our dissatisfaction towards the government by protesting. We can also take initiative to protect our environment by volunteering in environmental organizations.
